Wisdom from the centenarians

I loved watching this video, I love that John would stay up all night listening to the jazz band on the radio. I love the way Amelia talks about her lovely memories and the way the regards herself "lucky." I'm grateful for Cliff's reminder at the end about the way he regrets not going with his father. I think the common denominator is optimism.

“Never let a problem to be solved become more important than a person to be loved."

President Thomas S. Monson

On purpose

“You are not here merely to prepare to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget the errand.”

Woodrow Wilson

on family

“This is part of what a family is about, not just love. It's knowing that your family will be there watching out for you. Nothing else will give you that. Not money. Not fame. Not work.”

― Mitch Albom, Tuesdays with Morrie

the first noel

My grandmother, or as we call her, "Mommer," sent me this video today. Apparently this beautiful family lives only a few doors down from my Aunt Jeanene and Uncle Robert. I love this rendition, happy listening & happy Sunday.

No homework in finland

My piano teacher, Chris Vallejo, posted this video in his weekly email saying, "This video really struck me. Education has always been a topic close to my heart and this video made me hopeful that our system could change into something beautiful. This video explores how teachers in Finland operate, how students perform in school and what their day looks like. It’s essentially the opposite of the states. Very short school days, NO/LITTLE HOMEWORK, & a focus on the student’s happiness."

on writer's block

The thing you don't have control over is writing. You have to pull it out of yourself. You pace the room with something like the dry heaves, having no control over the muse, horrified that it won't come. All that's out there with you is the piano, this big black monster with 88 teeth.
